The Best Dog Clippers for Professionals

What to consider when Choosing Professional Dog Clippers or Trimmers?

The UK is a nation of dog lovers, and those dogs need to be groomed! With the huge rise in popularity of high maintenance breeds such as poodles, spaniels, and cockapoos, it’s no surprise that more people are following their passion and becoming professional dog groomers.

Professional Dog Groomers have a wide range of needs. They will be grooming a lot of different types of dogs, so need a variety of clippers, trimmers, blades, and combs. They will need spare blades, a variety of scissors, and several different brushes.

When considering choosing a dog clipper or trimmer, professional dog groomers need to consider power, reliability, and weight, as well as the finish left on the dogs’ coats. The clippers are going to have a lot of use, so heat may be an issue – some models are particularly good at keeping themselves cool. The clippers need to be easy to use - professional dog groomers will need to quickly fit and tension blades through the day, and attach combs. Will the dog groomer be at their base, or will they travel? This will affect the power source of the clippers. If they are on the road all day they will need spare batteries, and a way to organise all of their equipment- some clippers come with handy travel bags with lots of compartments.

We’ve thought about all of this and more to build our recommendations. Build quality and reliability is key here, letting the professionals get on with what they do best.

Dog Clipping Essentials for Professionals

Professional Blades for Dog Groomers

The clippers that we recommend use a snap on blade system, either Aesculap or the A5 system. You’ll need a variety of blades for the perfect clip for each different dog. Typically, the higher the number, the closer the cut. We recommend that groomers have a selection, and perhaps a few spares for when they’re off being sharpened! As a starting point, we recommend the No 5, 7, 9 & 10, as well as a few skip tooth blades.

Skip Tooth Blades have a unique design that feeds the hair into the blade. This is very effective on coarse haired dogs, and is often the first blade used on an all over clip as a sort of “rough cut”, to remove the bulk of the hair before the dog has a bath. They are great for blending short and long clips (where the legs join the body, for example), and are very effective where there is a very thick coat. If you find your standard blades are chewing the coat, or not clipping effectively, switch to a skip tooth.

Oster Blades

The Oster Cryogen-X A5 snap-on range of blades are of superior quality by a well-known brand and used by many professional dog groomers. The Oster blades feature self-tensioning and are easy to put on and take off with the A5 snap on system making them ideal for dog grooming. Oster Cryogen-X dog grooming blades stays cooler for longer, and have a revolutionary blade design that means that blades stay sharper longer. The Oster series of clipper blades fit on most types of Wahl and Andis clippers which take the A5, snap-on, blade system. All Oster blades can be sharpened for repeated use.

Constanta Blades

The Constanta range of blades are very affordable, high quality blades. They fit A5 dog clippers and make for a great value option. All Constanta blades can be sharpened for repeated use.

Wahl, Liveryman, Heinger & Aesculap Blades

Some dog groomers prefer to use the same brand of blades as their clipper unit. This is entirely optional, unless the clipper does not use the A5 system (the Aesculpa Favourita II is a great example of this). At Clippersharp we only stock the best quality blades, so the choice is up to you.

Professional Scissors for Dog Groomers

Scissors are vital for shaping and finishing clips. It’s the last finishing with the scissors that make the difference between a good clip, and a show winning clip. We recommend scissors from Mars or Smart Grooming – both are excellent quality, have a great range, and stay sharp for a long time.

Combs and Guards for Professional Dog Groomers

Your dog grooming kit needs a range of combs and graders. When choosing your combs and graders you must pay attention to the requirements of your clipper or trimmer, not all combs fit all units. Sometimes you are able to interchange brands, but not always. Also pay attention to the blade required for the combs to work properly. For example, Oster combs only work with a No. 10 blade. If you’d like help navigating this, please contact us.

Other Grooming Tools Needed by Professional Dog Groomers

No dog grooming kit would be complete without a Mars Coat King. Not every dog that you see will need to be clipped, some may just need to be tidied. The Mars Coat King does a fantastic job of removing dead hair, and giving the coat a stripped look without the discomfort.
