The Best Dog Clippers for Spaniels

Who doesn’t love a spaniel! These clever, kind dogs grow significant amounts of hair. Clipping is often the best choice to keep them clean, keep odours down, and to prevent mats.

There are a huge variety of clippers on the market. Considerations when choosing are:

  • Will you be clipping often?
  • Are you clipping more than one dog?
  • Does your spaniel have a particularly thick coat?

If the answer to these is yes, then it’s likely you’ll need a higher performance clipper – look for high reliability, good quality builds, and long warranties.

Have a think about the requirements of your dog. Do you have a large Springer Spaniel, or a small King Charles Cavalier Spaniel? A small dog often requires a smaller hand-piece to navigate legs and heads.

A quieter model of clipper with less vibration may make things easier if your spaniel is new to clipping.

If you’re just looking to tidy legs and belly then you may not need a full dog clipper; a lightweight trimmer may be enough. Trimmers typically come with combs to alter the length of the hair that is cut – perfect for shaping legs. Some, like the Sonic and the Liveryman Classic have adjustable blades, giving you even more flexibility over cutting length.

Recommended Blades When Clipping Spaniels

If you choose a clipper unit that uses the A5 blade system, you’ll need to choose the right blades. Typically, the higher the number, the closer the cut. There are also speciality blades available such as the skip tooth. Skip tooth blades are fantastic for penetrating thick coats, as well as for thinning or blending.

The precise blade number that you’ll need depends on the finish that you’d like, but we recommend the No 10 blade for the head and under the tail. Traditionally for showing the No 7 blade is used for the body, neck, and top of the tail.

If you’re looking for a less formal finish, we also recommend the No 7 skip tooth blade. It cuts to 3mm and is great for blending.
