What to Consider when Choosing Dog Clippers and Trimmers for Vets and Veterinary Practices?

Vets, nurses, and veterinary practices in general have a very specific use for clippers – they need to remove the hair from around the site of a procedure.

Hair can pose an infection risk, so as much of the hair as possible needs to be removed. This means a margin around the procedure site, and a very close clip. It can be difficult to remove hair very close to the skin without creating microabrasions – clippers are better than razors for this, and leave the skin healthy.

Whether it’s simply to take a blood test, or to shave a site for a major surgery, most procedures involve clipping the dog.

What is a Veterinary Clip?

Hair is clipped from the site of the procedure using a very fine blade. There needs to be fair margin of clipped hair around the procedure site – typically 10-15cm.

Initial clipper strokes are done in the direction of the coat to remove the bulk of the hair. To get a very fine clip the clippers are then reversed to clip against the hair, removing as much as possible.

The blades used will be much finer than most used at home or by grooming professionals, with the aim to remove as much of the hair as possible.

Which are the Best Dog Clipper Blades for Veterinary Practices?

We recommended Number 30 or Number 40 for the closest cut possible. The Oster No 30 and No 40 Vet Clipper Blade has been Cryogenically treated blade for additional wear and resistance even in professional use. These blades are designed to glide through hair for tug free grooming and are the only blade in the industry with an antimicrobial coating to protect against a range of bacteria for better hygiene.

  • Oster Golden A5 Two Speed

We recommend the Oster A5 Two Speed Mains. This is by far the most popular choice for veterinary practices that we work with. There are two variants of the Oster A5 – single speed and two speed. This two speed variant provides higher speeds for 1/3 faster body clipping.
